BENNY COULD imagine the conversation as he headed back to class. He figured Taylor and Jackson needed some time to process everything. He’d known Becca would try to apologize. Hell, he’d seen her crying at the hospital. They’d comforted each other when Taylor and Benny were apart and confused. He’d seen the person underneath the hard exterior and was there when the façade crashed down around her. She wasn’t some cartoon villain you could point a finger at and lay all the problems of the world at her feet. There was a good heart beating under the snark. It was a shame it took a near tragedy to bring it out.

The way Addy had stepped up to make her feel welcome made Benny happy. He didn’t know her, only her reputation and what had happened. He wasn’t there when Jackson got hurt, but they’d talked enough that Addy knew how Benny felt. It was good that they’d spoken. Even if Taylor and Jackson wouldn’t ever be Becca’s friends or supporters, it was important that the healing begin for all of them.

All heads turned to the door as Benny stepped back into class. The teacher took the hall pass from him and put it back into her desk drawer. She eyed him with a look somewhere between amusement and resignation. Benny took it to mean she knew what she was getting into with him. Even with the highest GPA in school, he was still a little bit of a smartass and not above using his considerable charms to get something if he really wanted it.

“Thank you, Ms. Jenna. That first day back to school breakfast didn’t quite sit well.”

There were appreciative snickers throughout the class. Ms. Jenna smiled and lowered her glasses slightly. “Perhaps you might want to consider more fiber in your diet, Benny. It helps when you’re full of… it.”

At that the class broke into big laughs. Benny nodded toward Ms. Jenna and tipped an imaginary hat. He had to admit, his AP psych teacher wasn’t one to take lightly, which was good. He liked teachers who could keep him on his toes.

The remainder of the day crawled for Benny. He loved school. His AP courses were challenging, and he was thrilled that they’d already begun to discuss several projects. He went through his schedule in his head, wanting to plan time to do the assignments, have a chance to get together with his friends, but most of all, he wanted to have the opportunity for some alone time with Addy. He checked his watch. Still two more hours left of the day. He began tapping his pen on the desktop, trying to will the clock to move faster. When the pen was snatched from him, Benny glanced up and saw Mr. Dean hovering over him.

“Mr. Peters, this isn’t a samba lesson. Others are here to learn, and I believe that’s what you’re here for, if I’m not mistaken.”

Benny gave Mr. Dean a sheepish smile. “Sorry. My mind isn’t here at the moment.
